NOW FOR TODAYS HOCK:
💍 Marriage + Mess: What’s Really Going On?
You walk into the kitchen and see dishes, crumbs, backpacks, cups, open cereal boxes, shoes under the table…And suddenly you feel that wave of tension roll through you.
You want to scream. Or cry. Or run.
But your husband walks in and grabs a snack and sits down like it’s a hotel lounge.
And you’re like:“HOW?! How are you so relaxed right now?!”
You’re not crazy.
You’re not being dramatic. And no, this isn’t a marriage issue.
It’s a clutter issue. And it hits women differently than it hits men.
🧠 What the science shows:
Studies from UCLA and Princeton have proven what so many of us feel every day:
Women’s cortisol (stress hormone) levels rise in cluttered environments (more than men)
Visual mess overwhelms our ability to focus and regulate emotions
The more we own, the more mental energy it takes, even if it’s hidden in “organized” bins
Your brain is still tracking every sock, every paper pile, every toy, every unfinished project, even if it’s not in your face.
💔 And yes, it affects marriage
When your environment is chaotic, you snap faster. You feel more resentment.
You start silently thinking:
“Why am I the only one doing anything?”
“How does he not even notice this?”
“If he really cared, he’d pick it up.”
Even if you have a good marriage.
Even if he’s a good man..
👶 It affects your parenting too
When your space feels cluttered , it’s harder to be the mother you want to be.
You say no to playdates (because the house is a mess). You don’t bake with the kids (because you don’t want to clean it up).You can’t sit and play (because your brain is already fried).
🧺 What can you do, right now?
Here’s the #1 thing I need you to know:
You do NOT throw out your husband’s things to feel calmer. In fact? Please don’t.
✨ Most Important Rule of Frum Minimalism:
You may never, ever, ever throw out someone else’s stuff.
Not your husband’s, not your kids’.
That’s not your job.
But here’s what is your job:
Start with your stuff. Your closet, your purse, your nightstand.
Choose a shared space (like the kitchen), and only touch what belongs to you.
Clear surfaces. Seriously, one clean counter can clear your whole nervous system.
Create one peaceful zone- that can not have any clutter
Lower the stimulation: reduce noise, get rid of excess decor, dim the visual chaos.
🎙️ And we’re talking all about this on Tuesday IYH!
I’m having a super chill convo with my friend Alisa Avruch from The Secret Spark, a transformation life coach who helps frum women deepen connection in marriage through Torah and mindset work.
We’ll be talking about:
Why physical mess creates emotional stress
How clutter quietly affects marriage dynamics
The invisible expectations we (accidentally) put on our husbands
What you can do without nagging, yelling, or touching his stuff
And how to bring more peace into your home… one drawer at a time
