Purim is nearly here, and if you’re looking for the best hamantaschen recipe, you’ve come to the right place!
I’ve been using this recipe from Tasty N Simple for years (with a few small tweaks of my own), and every single year, people come back asking for my hamantaschen. They’re that good! (I actually triple or quadruple this recipe!)
The best part? No margarine and no chilling required! That means less waiting and more baking—which is exactly what we need when Purim prep is in full swing!
The Dough Recipe
This dough is a dream to work with—soft, easy to roll, and bakes up beautifully.
Ingredients:
• 2 eggs
• 1/2 cup oil
• ½ to ¾ cup sugar (depending on how sweet you like it)
• 1½ teaspoons baking powder
• ¼ teaspoon salt
• 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
• 3 cups flour (start with 2½ cups and add more as needed)
Instructions:
1. Beat eggs, oil and sugar together until smooth.
2. Add baking powder, salt, and vanilla.
3. Slowly mix in the flour until a soft, workable dough forms. (In my experience, I usually need around 2½ cups.)
The Cherry Filling
This simple filling takes store-bought cherry pie filling to the next level!
Ingredients:
• ½ can cherry pie filling
• ¼ cup sugar
• ¼ cup flour
• 1 tablespoon cinnamon
Mix everything together and set aside.
The Magic Touch: Cinnamon Crumb Topping
This crumb topping is what makes these hamantaschen next level! It adds a delicious aurpise and makes them look bakery-worthy.
Ingredients:
• ¼ cup sugar
• 1 teaspoon cinnamon
• ¼ cup flour
• 1 tablespoon oil
Mix together until crumbly.
Assembling the Hamantaschen
1. Roll out your dough and cut circles using a cup or cookie cutter.
2. Add a small amount of filling in the center of each circle.
3. Sprinkle some of the crumb topping over the filling.
4. Fold the circles into triangles, pinching the edges to seal.
5. (Optional but highly recommended) Lightly brush with egg wash and sprinkle more crumbs on top so they stick beautifully.
Baking
Bake at 350°F (175°C) for about 12 minutes until golden.
Enjoy!
These hamantaschen are beautiful, delicious, and a total crowd-pleaser! Trust me—you’ll have people asking for them year after year.
Let me know if you try them! Happy baking and Freilichen Purim!
