Let’s Talk Simplifying Routines

Yesterday, I emailed you about simplifying food prep, and wow, you all really wanted to hear more about it! 🤩

So today, I want to shift gears and focus on automations.

When I got married, I had this realization:"Oh my gosh! I’m the adult now! I have to plan meals?!"

Growing up, my mother never stressed about dinner—it was just there every single night at 5 PM, like magic.

Feeling overwhelmed, I called her and asked, “How do you do it?”

She said something that stuck with me:“It’s a non-negotiable. I never think about it—I just do it.”

Dinner, for her, was as automatic as brushing her teeth, making her bed, or davening. It wasn’t a decision; it was just what happened.

So, I took her advice and adapted her system. And honestly? It’s been life-changing. ✨

Imagine Automating More Areas of Your Life

How awesome would it be to automate more things you do every day so you don’t need to think about them—just like brushing your teeth? These automations can become second nature. 💡

Here’s a list of automations my students and/or I swear by:

Automate Your Top Priorities!

The whole point of Frum Minimalism is making more time for the people we love the most! 💝

Dates with Your Kids:Treat time with your kids as non-negotiable. Schedule family days and one-on-one dates on the same day and time each week, just like you’d schedule a work meeting or client call. For example, every Sunday afternoon could be "park and ice cream time" or "library and story night."If I looked at your planner, would I see your kids listed as your top priority? Automate this time, so it’s as natural as brushing your teeth.

Dates with Your Husband:Plan a regular date night or day with your husband. Automate it by booking a babysitter who knows to come every week at the same time. This way, you don’t have to scramble to find a sitter. Make it non-negotiable—block that time in your planner, and don’t let other commitments take over.

Fun with Friends and Siblings:Life gets busy, and it’s easy to let social time slip through the cracks—I’ve been there. For years, I pushed it aside, but now I make it a priority.I’ve started scheduling regular coffee dates and fun activities with my siblings and siblings-in-law (and if you’re my good friend reading this—wink, wink—I’m slowly working my way to you!).Another great idea is to choose a specific day, like Friday phone calls or FaceTime chats with siblings. It doesn’t have to be complicated—just pick a time that works for everyone and commit to it.

Self-Care on Repeat 🧖‍♀️

  • Nail Appointments, Wig Washes, Laser, Waxing, Facials: Book these for the same day each month, so it’s never a last-minute scramble.

  • Exercise Routines: Whether it’s a morning walk or Pilates, scheduling it at the same time every day or week makes you actually do it.

  • Skincare Routines: Set up your nighttime skincare products in order, so you just go down the line without thinking about it.

Household Routines 🏡

  • Tidying Schedule: Pick one day a week to tidy up a messy area for just 30 minutes. (If you’ve followed my 3-step decluttering process from my book or course, you should already be living clutter-free—so there’s no more need for organizing!) What you’re doing now is simply maintaining the order you’ve already created. 😊

  • Weekly Shopping Day: Pick one day a week to tackle all your grocery and errand needs. Bonus: Keep a running list as you run out of items.

  • Laundry Routines: Set specific days for specific loads—Monday for whites, Thursday for sheets, etc. Life-changing!! 🙌

Example: My kids strip their beds on their designated day and toss the linens in the wash. I move them to the dryer, and the kids put it back on the beds within an hour. Done! 🛏️

  • Cleaning Rotations: Focus on one task or room a day. Example: mop floors on Tuesdays, bathrooms on Wednesdays.

Meal Prep Like a Pro 🍳

  • Rotating Menus: Set up a 2- or 4-week rotating menu to avoid decision fatigue.

  • Protein Assignment: Assign a protein to each day and never meal plan again! (More in my book!) 📖

  • Pre-Cut Ingredients: Keep chopped onions, garlic, or frozen veggies on hand to make cooking easier.

  • Frozen Meal Prep: Double recipes and freeze extras for nights you just can’t cook. (Okay, I don’t do this ever, but my students love it!)

  • Shopping List Automations: Use apps or a running list so you always know what you need.

Errands & Payments 💳

  • Subscriptions for Essentials: Automate deliveries for diapers, cleaning supplies, paper goods, or pantry staples like rice and pasta.

  • Bill Payments: Set up autopay for recurring bills so you never miss a due date.

  • Doctor Appointments: Schedule annual checkups for the same time each year.

(Some people even book their kids’ dentist cleaning appointments for a specific day each year, like a week before their birthday.)

Parenting Hacks 🤱

  • Back-to-School Prep: Prep school bags, snacks, and clothing the night before to avoid morning chaos. Make it automatic, and soon even your 3-year-old will prep their clothing at night!

  • Activity Bags: Keep ready-to-go bags for park trips or outings—snacks, sunscreen, wipes, all in one place.

So tell me:

✨ Which of these automations are you already doing?✨ Which one will you start automating today?✨ Did I miss anything?

Let me know—I love hearing your ideas too! 💌
