Book Review: The 5 AM Club

As a passionate reader of nonfiction only,I have a rule: when I hear a book recommended more than four times, I have to read it.

Recently, that book was The 5 AM Club by Robin Sharma.


📚 A friend of mine had a copy, and I was eager to borrow it. However, to my disappointment, it turned out to be one of the worst books I’ve ever read.

The writing style was confusing and oddly fictionalized, making it difficult and even painful for me to read.

Despite my disappointment with the book, I found that Robin Sharma’s ideas, which I’ve enjoyed through his podcasts, are still incredibly valuable.

So, instead of focusing on the book itself, I want to share some of these powerful concepts that can transform your life, especially as a busy mom.

🌅 The Power of Waking Up Early

One of Sharma’s core principles is the importance of waking up at 5 AM.

I am a big advocate of waking up early, and I am lucky I grew up in a Neitz family, so I saw the benefits of early rising.

This early start can provide you with a quiet, uninterrupted time to focus on personal growth. Here are some key benefits:

  • Peaceful Start: The early morning hours are often the only quiet time in a busy household. Use this time to daven, exercise, read, and simply enjoy a cup of coffee in peace.

  • Productivity Boost: Starting your day early gives you a head start. You can plan your day, set goals, and tackle tasks with a fresh mind, leading to increased productivity.

  • Personal Growth: Dedicate this time to activities that promote personal growth, such as journaling, exercising, or learning something new.



🕒 The 20/20/20 Formula

Sharma advocates the 20/20/20 formula to structure your morning routine:

  1. First 20 Minutes – Move: Engage in physical exercise. This boosts your energy levels and sets a positive tone for the day.

  2. Second 20 Minutes – Reflect: Spend time reflecting, davening, and journaling. This helps you clear your mind and focus on what’s important.

  3. Third 20 Minutes – Grow: Use this time to learn. Read a book, listen to a podcast, or study something new. Continuous learning is crucial for personal development.


📵 Digital Detox

As someone who teaches the importance of digital detox, I appreciate Sharma’s emphasis on reducing screen time. Here’s how you can implement a digital detox in your routine:

  • Set Boundaries: Limit your use of digital devices, especially in the morning and before bed. This helps improve your focus and sleep quality.

  • Tech-Free Zones: Create areas in your home where technology is not allowed, such as the dining room or bedroom. This encourages more meaningful interactions and relaxation.

  • Scheduled Breaks: Take regular breaks from screens throughout the day. Use these moments to stretch, take a walk, or engage in a non-digital hobby.


👩‍👧‍👦 Implementing These Ideas as a Busy Mom

  • Adjust Your Schedule: Waking up at 5 AM might seem daunting, but start gradually. Try waking up 15 minutes earlier each week until you reach your goal.

  • Involve Your Family: Share your goals with your family and encourage them to support your new routine. Perhaps they might even join you in waking up early and engaging in morning activities.

  • Self-Care: Use this quiet time to focus on self-care. As a mom, it’s essential to take care of yourself to be fully present for your family.


💡 Final Thoughts

While The 5 AM Club book was not to my liking (I cannot read fiction ever; I personally find it silly), the ideas Robin Sharma shares in podcasts are truly valuable.

By adopting an early morning routine, following the 20/20/20 formula, and committing to a digital detox, you can transform your life.
